Someone Told Me About...

Hey guys, this is my friend Sam. I really miss him, he graduated almost a year ago, and stuff has kinda sucked without him, since he moved home. I’m hoping to see him soon, but I just wanted to let him know that I miss him and our little family of friends. Love ya buddy! (When he see this, I can almost hear him say this.)

So I took today off…

To look for career specific work. Since leaving Uncle Howie’s (Starbucks), I have been steadily applying for local positions that incorporate Marketing.

I decided what feels like a long time ago that since I was stuck going to my safety school, I would make the best of it and try and make myself diverse as possible in my time here. So I completed majors in both Creative Writing and Africana Studies while I continue to pursue my main degree of Marketing.

Moving back to today, Fresno State is having an intensive career faire, over two days we have close to 80 perspective recruiters coming to shop our young professionals in training. I thought I would have a competitive edge, I mean I’ve never met anyone doing what it is that I’m doing.

But what I am doing, and what they were looking for seem to be two completely different things. Most of the recruiters were looking for individuals close to graduation(which I am), but more specifically like graduating this semester(which I am not). In conjunction with looking for impending graduates, they were almost all looking for students with Management majors. This was something I feel should have been advertised somewhere, but of course it wasn’t. I felt extremely out of place, because even though I have plenty of skills that could be applicable to various potential positions, i just wasn’t the degree they were looking for.

Out of the 60 recruiters there today, I talked to about 25 of the ones I thought I had the best shot at, given the deck stacked against me. From there I had about 10 whom I entertained the idea of and said they were interested, but time would tell if a position would become available that could incorporate my skill set. But from the 10 I had about 3 that were very very interested in me. And particularly, what prior internships I had earned a couple of years ago, working for some industry top players, and for being as young as I am completing three degrees at once. This was reassuring. It made me feel like maybe I haven’t wasted all this time in school, diversifying my skill set.

The faire is scheduled to run until 3, I was asked to meet with two of these potential positions recruiters at 3pm and at 4pm for interviews, so currently I am in the older half of the library, prepping in Special Collections, lying and saying I am, “compiling evidence I have already obtained from text checked out from my last visit.” In order to have access to the only truly quiet part of this library, while I research my potential employers. And while these positions wouldn’t be available until summer, if I get one, it is something to look foreword too.

So wish me luck, because I feel like this is the big break I need.

(I forgot to mention one is in S.F. and the other is in North Carolina, so literally worlds apart.)

Here is my It Girl(s) Mix. It started out as a mix intended for Arielle, but evolved into something I though would be equally suited for the mix-tape party last night. Which was loads of fun, as it always is. But I forgot my actual mix at home as I was leaving with friends, so while I was saddened by the though of someone not getting the mix, I decided to share it with everybody. You might hear some stuff you know and love, or something you don’t know and hopefully come to really enjoy. Track List is as follows…
